Please,
please don't abandon your pet!
Sometimes people
think they can't handle caring for their pet any longer and think
that the only answer is to drive their pet out into the country and leave
it where a friendly person will find it and take care of it. They
think that the pet will have a better chance than if they were surrendered
to an animal shelter where they might be put to sleep. Before you
think that dropping an animal off somewhere is better than bringing it
to an animal shelter, please consider the following:
-
Abandoned pets
will be terrified;
-
Abandoned pets
can slowly starve to death;
-
Abandoned pets
can be hit by a car and killed or injured (which injuries could lead to
a slow, painful death if the animal is not found by someone who will help
it);
-
Abandoned pets
can be killed or injured by other animals;
-
Abandoned pets
can be shot or otherwise killed or injured by someone who is afraid that
the animal is dangerous or diseased.
If you ever get
to the point where you think that dropping your pet off in the countryside
is the only answer, please e-mail ENAH at ENAHhelp@everyoneneedsahome.org.
ENAH will look for the Animal Shelter that is nearest you and will contact
them on your behalf. ENAH will work to arrange for your pet to be
accepted into the shelter.
-
If the shelter
requires a fee to be paid when animals are dropped off and you don't have
the money to pay that fee, ENAH will work to find the funds (preferred
solution) or ask the shelter to waive the fee (not the optimal solution
because animal shelters are usually critically short on funds).
-
If you are afraid
to bring your pet to an animal shelter because you want to remain anonymous,
ENAH will arrange that also.
