ENAH’s Spay/Neuter Project

Project Strategy (in progress since 06/01/03).

This is how the project works:

1.    Interested residents of the Wisconsin counties of Lafayette, Green or Iowa  Counties contact ENAH to request a free spay or neuter surgery for their cat(s), either by writing to 6410 County N, South Wayne, WI, 53587.  For as long as funds remain, the resident will be approved. (see “Policy Against Discrimination”).

2.    A board member of ENAH notifies the appropriate participating veterinarian of the resident’s choice regarding the spay/neuter approval.  [ENAH requires all surgeries to be performed by veterinarians participating in the project.]

3.    The resident then contacts the veterinarian and arranges the surgery.

4.    The veterinary clinic bills ENAH for the surgery.

There are approximately 1,400 farms in Lafayette County1.  Many, many of them have multiple cats, often numbering in the double digits.  It has been proven that euthanasia does not resolve the cat overpopulation problem2, nor is it humane.  ENAH empathizes with farm families who have multiple cats, often from people dumping animals off at their farms, and cannot afford to spay or neuter them all.  ENAH believes that a factor critical to the success of this spay/neuter project is to target multiple-cat farms and sterilize the entire cat population at that farm.  Sterilization of all cats on each farm entered into the project will help stabilize the cat populations on those farms.
