Writings by Young Adults The True Story about a Homeless Dog: "Snickers" By: Rachel Ellingson This true story was submitted by 10-year old Rachel, about her dog "Snickers": One day when my dad was on a job site north of Monroe he noticed a small four legged animal which at the time he didn't know what it was. The animal wandered out of the weeds and walked over to him. At that point he determined that it probably was a dog and that it was really thirsty and hadn't been fed for a long time. At that moment my dad picked up the dog and put it in the back of the truck so these two big dogs couldn't hurt it. Then my dad gave the dog some water. On my dad's way home he was going to take the dog to the pound but my mom told him to wait. So then he took the dog home. Later as my dad picked me up from a friend's house, on the way home he told my brother and me he had a surprise at home. When we got home there was a little head peeking out of the back of the truck. After we got out of the car my dad let the dog out of the back of the truck. My brother Josh and I took the dog to the side of the house and started playing with it. The dog kept following me around and I told my brother to pick the dog up because I was scared of dogs at the time. Later when my mom and my other brother Ryan got home we got the dog some dog food because the dog was really thin. We watched the newspaper to see if there was a missing dog ad. After a couple of days nobody claimed her so we took her to the vet to get the dog checked out. We found out the dog was a girl and that she was about three or four. We took her home and named her Snickers. After that we cleaned her up and got her hair cut. Its been at least four or five years and we still have her. I am not scared of her anymore. She is the sweetest dog. Everyone adores her. Snickers follows me everywhere I go. If I were to recommend the perfect pet it would be Snickers because she is so gentle. If you tell her to bite someone she won't listen. So if I were to pick out the perfect pet Snickers would be number one on my list. ***** Rachel's grandmother, Donna, writes that "Snickers is so important to many people. She is mostly pug and was completely housebroken. If anyone raised their voice she would be frightened and crouch down. Most of this has disappeared due to the love she has received. Snickers has slept with Rachel for years and puts her head on pillows like a human. She could be left all day and never make a mess. As her grandmother I have kept her many times and we have a special relationship. She sleeps with me also. I made a special pillow for her and when she comes she pulls out the pillow and curls up on it. It will be a very sad day when there is no Snickers to lay on her pillow."
