Wildlife Section

This section is devoted to providing educational resource links and information on wildlife.

Please read my Letter addressed to the person who deliberately ran over a animal by my house.  If you feel it has any merit, you are welcome to pass it along.

Wildlife Book Recommendation:   "Healers of the Wild: People Who Care for Injured and Orphaned Wildlife; a guide for young people, their families, schools, and communities", by Shannon K. Jacobs.  Published in 1998 by Coyote Moon Press, Denver, CO.  Too often, well-meaning people come across wildlife babies and think they need "saving".  Sometimes they do, but a lot of times they don't.  This book will help you decide when your help is needed and when it's not.  It is aimed at educating young people, but is highly readable for adults.  It is chock full of information about wild animals.  For example, did you know that raccoons and squirrels usually have at least two dens (pg. 83)?  This means that, if you accidentally disturb or destroy a nest containing these babies, they don't necessarily need to be rescued.  The mother will often move them to another den or nest.  If you do come across wildlife that are truly injured or orphaned, this book shows you how to contact the wildlife experts in your area (addresses, phone numbers and other resources provided in the book) where the animal will have the best chance of survival.  I wish I could put a copy of this book in every household.

If you can't find this book at your local library, it is available for purchase at Amazon.com
